The Partnership for Open Access (POA) enables open access publishing in Canada.
The POA provides financial support to non-commercial scholarly journals through the ongoing commitment of library partners and is based on a close collaboration between all stakeholders of the research ecosystem.
Part of the diamond open access movement, the POA is building a collective, equitable, and robust path for the dissemination of knowledge.
The POA in Numbers
Each year, the POA enables the publication of
more than 2,000 scholarly articles in immediate open access.
More than 250 scholarly journals are supported financially through the POA, with over 180 journals publishing in immediate open access, and with 40 flips made possible with help from the POA.
The POA is supported by more than 90 libraries around the world.
The POA is based on an open access model that does not charge fees to either readers or authors. This model is called diamond open access.
Partner Libraries
The POA is supported by a large number of libraries around the world.
These collaborations are put in place through consortial agreements.

An Engaged Community
The beautiful online display and enhanced discoverability provided by Érudit have boosted our impact and credibility, and the funding provided through the Partnership for Open Access has helped make our commitment to diamond open access more sustainable in the long run.
– David Waddington

Through the POA, Erudit offers very generous financial support for open access journals like The Trumpeter, without which our journal would not have been able to make improvements to the hosting arrangements for its servers.
– Nathan Kowalsky
Editor, The Trumpeter
The Partnership for Open Access between the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and Érudit is integral to CRKN’s goal to advance interconnected, sustainable access to knowledge. Through this partnership, our members champion bibliodiversity and sustainability in the Canadian scholarly landscape and enable access to vital content in both of Canada’s official languages.
– Clare Appavoo
Executive Director, CRKN
Through the Partnership for Open Access, Canadian academic libraries are helping to transform scholarly publishing and extend the reach of Canadian scholarship without the barriers of paywalls. This partnership is a model for the global community and SFU is delighted to be a partner in such an important endeavor.
– Gwen Bird
Dean of Simon Fraser University Librairies
By promoting access to publications for our university community while helping our research teams publish in Canadian journals, the POA represents a key element of our commitment to open science.
– Stéphanie Gagnon
Executive Director, Bibliothèques de l’Université de Montréal
Since 2014, Université Laval has been enthusiastically committed to the Partnership for Open Access (POA) as part of our support for the open and equitable dissemination of knowledge, which goes to the very heart of our mission. This initiative represents a practical and indispensable way to support journals in their transition to diamond open access.
– Loubna Ghaouti
Executive Director, Bibliothèque de l’Université Laval
The Canadian journals supported by the POA are all independent and very diverse. Mostly run by researchers based in our universities, these journals are deeply rooted in our academic communities. By providing them with stable financial support, the POA plays a key role in their sustainable transition to open access, while facilitating access to the results of Canadian research.
– Tanja Niemann
Executive Director, Érudit
Le Cygne noir, revue d’exploration sémiotique has greatly benefited from the Partnership for Open Access. Without it, our journal would have faced significant challenges. This support has allowed us to continue our work of publishing and disseminating in French. It contributes to the quality of our scholarly journal. Receiving this assistance is an extraordinary opportunity.
– Emmanuelle Caccamo
Executive Director, Le Cygne noir, revue d’exploration sémiotique
“By partnering with Érudit and receiving financial support from the POA, we were able to alleviate some of the pressure on our team while continuing to grow the journal. The journal is now well-established, with a steadily increasing readership and publication volume, and has a stable funding stream that we continue to grow to ensure the long-term viability of the journal.”
– Bryn Williams-Jones
Editor-in-Chief, Canadian Journal of Bioethics / Revue canadienne de bioéthique
